Gabriel Diallo of Montreal continued his strong performance, fresh from his first ATP Tour title, with a first-round victory at the HSBC Championships in London. He defeated British wild-card Billy Harris with a score of 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
This win completed a successful day for Canadian players at ATP 500 grass-court tournaments. Félix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov also secured victories in their opening matches at the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle, Germany.
Diallo, aged 23, who had won the ATP 250 Libema Open the previous week, showcased his serving skills, out-acing Harris 11-10 and achieving an 85 percent success rate on his first serves. He converted four out of seven break opportunities while saving four of the six break points he faced. His next opponent will be Jiri Lehecka of Czechia.
In Halle, Auger-Aliassime, also from Montreal, secured a first-round win against Serbian qualifier Laslo Djere with a score of 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-1. After a close second set, Auger-Aliassime dominated the third set, winning 93 percent of his first serve points and converting two of his three break chances. This victory marked Auger-Aliassime's first win against Djere in their three encounters. His next match will be against the winner of a match between Karen Khachanov and Zizou Bergs.
Shapovalov advanced to the second round after defeating sixth seed Ugo Humbert of France with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (4). Shapovalov secured the win on his first match point. He will next face Flavio Cobolli of Italy.
In the WTA 500 Berlin Tennis Open, Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ont., was defeated in the first round by Amanda Anisimova of the United States with a score of 6-4, 6-3. Anisimova broke Andreescu three times to secure the win in 65 minutes.
