Kurek Resigns to Pave Way for By-Election, Leadership Review Ahead

Pierre Poilievre's campaign to return to the House of Commons is commencing with the formal resignation of the Alberta MP who offered his seat to the Conservative Leader. Damien Kurek officially stepped down as the MP for Battle River—Crowfoot on Tuesday, following his announcement last month of his intention to resign.

Mr. Kurek secured the riding in the April 28 vote with almost 83 percent of the vote, marking his third win in a seat the party has held for many years. However, after Mr. Poilievre lost his own seat in the election, Mr. Kurek declared he would resign to provide the party leader with a place to run.

Mr. Poilievre had represented an Ottawa-area riding for nearly two decades but lost it to Liberal Bruce Fanjoy in a significant upset for the Conservatives. His loss prevents him from serving as Opposition Leader in the House of Commons, a role currently filled by former party leader Andrew Scheer.

Although Mr. Kurek is stepping down, he stated it is a temporary move. He expressed his support for Mr. Poilievre, highlighting his qualities and dedication. Mr. Kurek plans to continue working with his local team and intends to run again in Battle River—Crowfoot in the next general election.

The specific riding Mr. Poilievre will contest in the next general election campaign is yet to be determined. Mr. Kurek's resignation was delayed due to regulations in the Elections Act and the Parliament of Canada Act.

Now that the resignation is official, the Speaker will notify Elections Canada of the vacancy. Following this process, Prime Minister Mark Carney is required to wait a minimum of 11 days, but no more than 180 days, before calling a by-election. Mr. Carney has indicated his intention to call one as soon as possible.

In addition to gaining voter support in the riding, Mr. Poilievre will also face a leadership review within his own party. The Conservative Party's constitution mandates that at the first national convention after an election the party doesn't win, if the leader hasn't resigned, delegates will vote on whether to initiate the leadership selection process. This is scheduled to occur in January.

Poilievre deserves another chance. He's the right leader.

This is a slap in the face to the voters of Battle River—Crowfoot.
