Queensland Maroons coach Billy Slater is placing his trust in players with regional backgrounds to keep the team competitive in the 2025 State of Origin series. Many of the Queensland players selected for the second game of the series developed through regional pathway programs and rural communities.
Tom Dearden is one of fourteen players from regional Queensland named in the 20-man team. He will take on a greater role this week, replacing Daly Cherry-Evans as the Maroons' starting number 7. Dearden's selection fulfills a long-held dream, dating back to his junior football days in Mackay.
Coach Billy Slater, himself from Innisfail, emphasized that every player earned their place through dedication. He acknowledged the strength of their opponent but expressed confidence that the team has yet to reach its full potential.
Kurt Capewell, from Charleville, will have a large contingent of hometown supporters cheering him on. The 31-year-old, who wasn't selected for the first game, earned his spot back through improved club performances. His family, still residing in Charleville, noted the positive impact of his selection on the town, providing a reason for increased community involvement in the game.
Queensland debutant Kurt Mann is realizing a State of Origin dream he once thought might never happen. His brother Joel reflected on his journey from the Winton juniors to the Maroons' bench. The Bulldogs lock is set to make his Queensland debut, becoming one of the oldest players to do so. His brother highlighted the sacrifices made, including numerous long-distance trips for games, which have now been rewarded.
Queensland Rugby League's pathways manager Glenn Ottaway highlighted the strong representation of the regions in the team. He believes that in the second game of the 2025 State of Origin series, children from Winton, Charleville, and Mackay will see themselves reflected on the field.
