Iran Strikes, Diplomatic Tensions, and G7 Summit Dynamics

A protest supporting Iran and Palestinians took place in Times Square, New York City, on June 16, 2025.

Following the US withdrawal from a nuclear deal in 2018, Iran had increased uranium enrichment, though not to weapons-grade levels. Meanwhile, former President Trump, making a return to international diplomacy, departed a gathering in the Canadian Rockies early as Israel launched attacks on Iran.

After initially supporting diplomacy, Trump issued a warning to the people of Tehran via social media, urging their immediate evacuation. He later agreed to a joint statement on the crisis during a dinner in Kananaskis.

The joint statement, released by Canada, called for a broader de-escalation in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza. It acknowledged Israel's right to defend itself while emphasizing the importance of protecting civilians, as attacks continued to cause casualties on both sides. The G7 leaders expressed their belief that Iran should never possess a nuclear weapon.

Trump, who had previously favored diplomacy, quickly supported Israel's strikes, stating that Iran should have accepted his terms. Before leaving the summit, he mentioned the importance of his early departure. French President Emmanuel Macron suggested the US was prepared to make a diplomatic offer. Trump had also stated that the US would be taking action soon after his departure.

Trump declined to confirm US involvement in Israeli military action, although he stated that Washington was not involved in the initial strikes. He had previously stated that Iran would be wise to agree to a negotiated settlement. He also mentioned that Iran was not winning the war and should negotiate immediately. The US president would miss a day of G7 meetings, including discussions with the leaders of Ukraine and Mexico.

Since Friday, Israel had targeted major nuclear and military sites in Iran, resulting in the deaths of key commanders and nuclear scientists. Iran responded with its own attacks on Israel. Macron expressed concerns about Israel's potential goal of removing the Iranian government.

The summit occurred amidst global instability following Trump's return to the White House. Trump had vowed to impose tariffs, though implementation was postponed. He expressed optimism about reaching agreements with Canada and the UK. He had previously mocked Canada but appeared to show more respect since a new Prime Minister took office.

Trump had initially sought diplomacy regarding Iran and Ukraine, which Russia invaded in 2022. He expressed frustration that Russian President Vladimir Putin had not accepted a US proposal for a ceasefire. Trump also stated that Putin was offended by Russia's expulsion from the G8 and that the war might not have occurred if Russia were still a member.

Glad to see people uniting to support Iran and Palestine. The US needs to stop its meddling.
