On Monday, authorities in at least three states reported investigations or prosecutions related to threats made against politicians. These actions followed the arrest and charging of a man in Minnesota the previous day, concerning the assassination of a state lawmaker.
In Texas, officials reported the detention of an armed individual who had threatened violence against lawmakers at the State Capitol. Simultaneously, in Georgia, a man was arraigned on charges of threatening sexual violence against two United States senators. Virginia saw the arrest of a former Coast Guard officer accused of making online threats against President Trump.
The prevalence of threats and acts of violence targeting officials at all levels of government has become a concerning aspect of the American political environment.
Examples of such incidents include a 2020 kidnapping plot targeting Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, the 2022 attack on the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and two assassination attempts against President Trump during his second presidential campaign. More recently, in April, the home of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro was set on fire while he and his family were inside.

Anyone can say they're going to do something. Doesn't mean they will. This is overkill.
