The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has experienced a significant setback as two prominent labor union leaders have resigned from their positions. This move represents a notable criticism of the new DNC chairman, Ken Martin.
Randi Weingarten, the head of the American Federation of Teachers, and Lee Saunders, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, have both declined offers to continue serving as at-large members of the national party. Their departures signal a loss of confidence in the DNC.
These resignations are particularly impactful as Democrats currently lack significant political power and are actively seeking to define their message and leadership in opposition to President Trump. In their resignation communications, the union leaders indicated concerns that the DNC, under Mr. Martin's leadership, was not effectively broadening its base of support.
It is worth noting that both Weingarten and Saunders had previously supported Ben Wikler, the chairman of the Wisconsin Democratic Party, in the race for the DNC chairmanship. Following the election, Mr. Martin removed Ms. Weingarten from the Rules and Bylaws Committee, a committee that plays a crucial role in shaping the Democratic Party's presidential nomination process.
