A devastating event occurred on Sunday night at the annual festival in West Valley City, Utah, leaving three people dead, including an infant. The West Valley City police have confirmed that the fatal shooting was the culmination of a verbal dispute that quickly turned violent.
The incident began around 9:20 p.m. local time. Officers, who were present at the festival held in a suburb of Salt Lake City, observed a heated argument between two separate groups of individuals. As the officers moved towards the groups with the intention of mediating and preventing any further conflict, the situation rapidly deteriorated.
Tragically, a 16-year-old male, who was part of one of the groups, produced a handgun and began firing shots. In an attempt to neutralize the threat, an officer also discharged their firearm. Fortunately, the officer's shots did not make contact with the gunman. The West Valley Police Department swiftly took action and took the 16-year-old into custody. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing.

Thankful for the officers who tried to mediate. It’s a shame that things escalated so quickly.

It’s time for an honest conversation about violence in our society. My heart goes out to everyone involved.

The lack of accountability for youth with firearms is sickening. We need stricter laws and consequences.

This just shows we need to do more to educate young people on handling disputes peacefully.

This type of violence is becoming normalized. We need to stand up and say ENOUGH!
