The Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP) has surpassed the Democratic Party for the People (DPP) in terms of support among opposition forces, according to a recent survey. The DPP's support has been declining, marking its second consecutive month with a single-digit support rate.
The survey, conducted on June 14 and 15, revealed that the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) held the highest support rate at 23 percent. The CDP followed with 7 percent, while the DPP received 6 percent.
Respondents were also asked about their preferred party in the proportional representation section of the upcoming Upper House election. The LDP maintained a significant lead, chosen by 26 percent of respondents. The CDP received 12 percent, and the DPP received 10 percent. Other parties, including Nippon Ishin, Reiwa Shinsengumi, Komeito, the Japanese Communist Party, and Sanseito, also received support.
The DPP's decline in support coincides with public criticism regarding its handling of a controversial candidacy. The party initially endorsed a candidate but later reversed its decision due to public backlash. Only 24 percent of respondents approved of the DPP's handling of the matter, while 63 percent disapproved.
The survey also explored public views on the consumption tax, a key issue in the Upper House election campaign. The CDP has proposed temporarily removing the tax on food items, while the LDP has ruled out tax cuts. A slim majority of respondents, 51 percent, favored lowering the tax rate, either temporarily or permanently, compared to 41 percent who supported maintaining the current rate.
The survey also examined concerns about the impact of a tax cut on social security funding. A total of 19 percent of respondents expressed strong concern, while 45 percent expressed some concern. The survey was conducted using randomly generated landline and mobile phone numbers, with a total of 1,256 valid responses received.
