The head of the Japan Meteorological Agency, Ryoichi Nomura, has addressed circulating rumors in Hong Kong about a potential major earthquake in Japan this summer, asserting that such forecasts are not scientifically valid. He emphasized that current scientific capabilities do not allow for accurate predictions regarding the timing, size, or location of earthquakes.
These unsubstantiated claims, which began gaining traction on social media platforms, were fueled by references from a well-known feng shui master and a Japanese manga artist. As a result, there has been a noticeable downturn in both flight cancellations and new bookings from Hong Kong to Japan, significantly impacting tourism.
In response, Japan's Cabinet Office attempted to dispel these rumors in late April by clarifying the unpredictability of earthquakes of specific times and locations. However, despite their efforts, flight demand from Hong Kong to Japan saw a continued decline, prompting airlines to cut back on their flight schedules.
One airline announced reductions in flights between Hong Kong and several Japanese cities such as Sendai and Tokushima. Moreover, with continued low demand into June, they decided to suspend flights between Hong Kong and Kumamoto, as well as Kagoshima, during July and August.
At a news conference, Nomura reiterated the scientific consensus that while earthquakes are unpredictable, preparedness is crucial, as they could occur at any moment. In late May, the Japan Meteorological Agency reiterated through their social media accounts that their scientific understanding does not currently enable precise earthquake predictions.

People need to stop believing in fortune tellers and manga artists over actual scientists. The JMA knows what they're talking about!

A delay or postponement is more than worth it considering what the worst case scenario can be. I hope those that are on the ground stay safe!

I trust the JMA. They’re the experts, and they're saying there's no scientific basis for these claims.

Feng shui masters?! Seriously? Come on, people! Scientists are the experts on this, and they say it's impossible to predict earthquakes.

I trust the manga artist! So, I will postpone my trip!
