Vance Boelter, a 57-year-old man, is scheduled for a court appearance on Monday after being charged with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder. These charges stem from a tragic incident that occurred on June 14, where he is accused of fatally shooting Democratic State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, at their home, while also seriously injuring State Senator John Hoffman and his spouse, Yvette.
Following the shooting, which took place early Saturday morning, law enforcement officials apprehended Boelter in a rural part of Sibley County, located southwest of Minneapolis. Authorities reported that he was armed at the time of his arrest. A criminal complaint revealed details concerning the incident, noting that Boelter fled on foot after police responded to the scene, donning an outfit that closely mimicked an actual police uniform—a disguise that could deceive most civilians.
In an effort to locate him, Drew Evans, superintendent of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, announced a nationwide warrant for Boelter’s arrest and the discovery of his vehicle a few miles from his residence in Green Isle. The authorities also found evidence in the vehicle pertinent to their investigation, although specifics were not disclosed. To aid in the search, the FBI offered a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to Boelter’s capture and circulated an image of him wearing a tan cowboy hat.
On a more personal note, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar relayed a message from Yvette Hoffman, who expressed gratitude for the public support during this devastating time. She shared that both she and her husband, John, survived multiple gunshot wounds, stating they feel fortunate to be alive despite the tragic loss of their close friends, Melissa and Mark Hortman.
