Senator Alex Padilla, a Democrat representing California, recounted his version of events following his removal from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's press conference in Los Angeles last week. He stated that he was merely attempting to ask a question during the incident.
Padilla explained that he was already present in the building for a separate briefing when he decided to attend Noem's press conference, which focused on recent immigration protests and unrest in Los Angeles. He described the ensuing events as something "you can't script in Hollywood."
The Senator emphasized that he did not intend to be disrespectful or disruptive. He asserted that he was simply trying to ask a question, similar to how members of the press, Congress, and the Senate fulfill their roles in holding the administration accountable.
Footage of the incident showed Padilla attempting to approach Secretary Noem while she was speaking and trying to speak over her. Law enforcement intervened, preventing his advance. He was subsequently removed from the room, brought to the ground, and handcuffed. Following the incident, Padilla and Noem held a meeting, which both parties described as civil or cordial, despite their differing viewpoints.
