House Speaker Lisa Demuth shared her relief on social media, expressing her happiness that the suspect was in custody and the ordeal was concluding. She acknowledged her gratitude to the local, state, and federal officials involved in ensuring the suspect would face justice.
Over twenty agencies collaborated to capture the suspect. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz extended his thanks to them for their dedication, highlighting their willingness to leave their families to pursue justice.
Boelter, aged 57, was apprehended in Sibley County after a two-day manhunt. He is accused of fatally shooting Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, at their home in Brooklyn Park. He is also accused of shooting State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in their nearby Champlin home.
Governor Walz emphasized the need for unity within the U.S. and the importance of rejecting violence as a solution. He stated that the nation must not become desensitized to violence and that solutions should be sought through humility, grace, and civility. He also requested that the community acknowledge the pain and grief experienced by the Hortman family and find comfort in their memory.
The Governor also expressed his gratitude to law enforcement officers for their courage, service, and professionalism, acknowledging their role in saving lives. He concluded by stating that fear would not prevail as the community heals.
U.S. Senator Amy Klombuchar of Minnesota also expressed her appreciation to all law enforcement officers involved in the pursuit of the suspect, describing their efforts as a significant and heroic undertaking.
