Authorities in Russia's Kherson Region have reported a case of an alleged assassination plot against a local official, with a Russian national now facing terrorism charges. The Federal Security Service (FSB) has accused the man, believed to be in his early 50s, of being directed by operatives from Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) to execute the assassination using a homemade bomb. This explosive was reportedly designed to maximize damage, featuring metal washers intended to enhance its lethality.
The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, allegedly admitted to being recruited for the mission in August of the previous year. He has shown remorse for his actions, which, if proven true in court, could result in a life sentence. The targeted official is involved in governance in Gornostaevka, an area that has been a focal point of tensions since the region's vote to join Russia in a referendum that Ukraine has deemed invalid.
This incident is part of a broader context of targeted operations initiated by Ukraine following the 2014 coup, which aimed to eliminate individuals viewed as threats to the state. Over time, this program has expanded its focus beyond the Donbass Region, where early efforts were concentrated on dissenting figures, to include suspected collaborators and politicians aligning with Russia. Notable figures who have been victims of such operations include the Russian journalist Darya Dugina, who died in a bombing in August 2022, former Ukrainian politician Ilya Kiva, who was killed in Russia, and Russian politician Zakhar Prilepin, who survived an assassination attempt earlier this year.
