The Chinese Defense Ministry issued a statement on Thursday addressing recent maritime tensions with the Philippines in the South China Sea. The ministry urged the Philippines to cease what it described as "risky infringements and provocations" near Huangyan Island.
Senior Colonel Jiang Bin, a ministry spokesperson, made the remarks during an online news briefing. He was responding to reports that the Philippines had repeatedly deployed naval frigates in an attempt to access waters surrounding the island, which China claims as its territory.
Jiang stated that Philippine military vessels had recently attempted to enter the territorial sea of Huangyan Island. He accused them of approaching Chinese vessels in a dangerous manner. China maintains that it took necessary measures to halt and repel the Philippine vessels, actions it deemed legitimate, legal, professional, and restrained.
The spokesperson characterized the Philippine actions as "highly irresponsible," asserting that they seriously threatened China's sovereignty and security. He emphasized China's firm resolve to protect its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests. Jiang warned the Philippines that continuing these actions would lead to negative consequences.

China's measures were legitimate and professional, as stated. The Philippine vessels were the aggressors.

China has every right to defend its sovereignty over Huangyan Island. It's their territory, plain and simple.

Who decides what's 'legal' and 'legitimate' when it comes to these waters? China's interpretation is far from impartial.
