The 2025 Asian Weightlifting Championships took place in Jiangshan, located in the eastern province of Zhejiang, and concluded on Thursday with China emerging as the clear leader. The nation secured a remarkable tally of 31 gold medals, alongside 15 silver and 11 bronze medals. On the last day of competition, Li Yanyan, a Chinese competitor in the women's over-87kg class, excelled by claiming three gold medals, achieving a snatch of 140 kg and a clean and jerk lift of 170 kg, resulting in a total lift of 310 kg.
This year's event was particularly notable as it marked the first instance of the Asian Weightlifting Championships being hosted by a county-level city within China. The tournament not only showcased the athletes' skills but also indicated a pivotal moment in the sport, with significant changes ahead as the International Weightlifting Federation prepares to introduce a new weight category system by June 2025. Jiangshan has a history of hosting major weightlifting events, beginning with the China-Japan-Korea Weightlifting Invitational in 2016, and has successfully organized seven national championships and over ten international training sessions, drawing nearly 20 Olympic and world champions to the area.
