Rory McIlroy, facing criticism for avoiding media appearances after six consecutive major championship rounds, broke his silence on Saturday at the U.S. Open. He stated he felt he had earned the right to choose when and if he speaks to the press.
While PGA Tour players are not required to speak to the media after their rounds, it's become customary for someone of McIlroy's stature, the world number two and a prominent figure on the U.S.-based circuit, to do so. Following a disappointing four-over 74 at Oakmont Country Club, which placed him far from contention, McIlroy addressed reporters.
When asked if his recent decline in form since winning the Masters contributed to his decision to avoid the media, McIlroy responded, "No, not really. It's more a frustration with you guys." He elaborated, expressing a general dissatisfaction with the media landscape, though he clarified that his issue wasn't necessarily with individual reporters.
McIlroy's silence at majors began at the previous month's PGA Championship. He declined to speak after a poor first round and maintained his silence when news of his driver failing a conformance test surfaced during the second round. He cited the leaked information as a factor in his decision, also pointing out that he had previously walked past the media without comment after his opening round at this year's Masters.
McIlroy emphasized that his actions were not unprecedented, stating, "I've done it before; I'm just doing it a little more often." He concluded, "I feel like I've earned the right to do whatever I want to do, yeah."
The Northern Irishman acknowledged that the rules do not compel him to speak to the media after his rounds. He clarified that he wasn't trying to provoke the PGA Tour into changing its rules. He added that it was a "nice luxury to have."
Having struggled at the challenging Oakmont course, McIlroy made the cut on Friday. He admitted that playing with little pressure, being on the cut line, made it easier to perform better. When asked about his expectations for the final round, McIlroy expressed his desire to finish quickly and leave the course.

Fair play is a two-way street. How do we know what's happening with him if he won't talk?

If he has nothing to say because he played badly, he has to say something. The fans deserve it.

The Masters was what? One month ago? Is he suffering from a letdown?

Earned the right"? He's acting like he's above the sport. Bad look, Rory.
