Baghdad has initiated contact with both the Iranian and US governments in an effort to avoid being drawn into a wider regional conflict, according to officials on Saturday, June 14th. This move comes amidst escalating tensions and exchanges of attacks between Israel, a US ally, and Iran.
The Iraqi government maintains close ties with Tehran, but also considers the United States a strategic partner. The US currently has approximately 2,500 troops stationed in Iraq as part of an anti-jihadist coalition.
In a statement released late Saturday, the Iraqi government firmly condemned any violation of its airspace or its use in military actions against Iran by Israel. It also urged the United States to fulfill its obligations and prevent Israeli aircraft from utilizing Iraqi airspace for such attacks.
Furthermore, a senior Iraqi security official revealed that Baghdad had requested that Tehran refrain from targeting US interests within Iraqi territory. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that Iran had provided assurances of a positive response to this request.

Is Iraq really trying to maintain close ties with a regime that spreads chaos? It’s baffling!

Baghdad should not be playing both sides. It only creates confusion and distrust.

By reaching out to both Iran and the U.S., Iraq is asserting its independence and strategic importance.
