Smith to Miss First West Indies Test with Finger Injury

Steve Smith will be absent from Australia's initial test match against the West Indies in Barbados later this month. Captain Pat Cummins has indicated that Smith's finger injury might even sideline him for the entire three-test series.

Smith, a key player for Australia, sustained a compound dislocation of his right little finger while fielding on the third day of the World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord’s. The injury occurred on Friday, forcing him to miss the remainder of the match.

Following the injury, Smith was transported to the hospital for x-rays. Fortunately, surgery was not necessary. However, he is expected to be out of action for a period of time.

Cummins stated that Smith's participation in the first test is unlikely, and further assessment will determine his availability for subsequent matches. This announcement came after Australia's unexpected defeat to South Africa, who secured a five-wicket victory on Saturday.

During the match, Smith was positioned closer to the stumps than usual when he dropped South Africa captain Temba Bavuma. Bavuma, who had scored two runs at the time, went on to score 66, significantly contributing to his team's win.

Australia's three-test series in the Caribbean will commence in Bridgetown from June 25-29. The remaining two tests will be played in Grenada and Jamaica.
