Early Saturday, a Democratic state lawmaker and her husband were killed in what is believed to be a "politically motivated assassination," according to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Another lawmaker and his spouse were wounded in a separate incident.
Governor Walz described the situation as an "unspeakable tragedy" and identified the deceased as Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. He stated they were shot and killed early that morning. Walz also noted that Senator John Hoffman and his wife were shot multiple times. They underwent surgery, and the Governor expressed cautious optimism about their survival.
The suspect fled the scene after an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement. Authorities discovered a manifesto within the suspect's vehicle that identified numerous lawmakers and officials.
Governor Walz emphasized the need to oppose all forms of political violence, both in Minnesota and across the nation. He assured that those responsible for the attacks would be held accountable.

The authorities are guilty of pushing this too fast. We need a full investigation before making conclusions based on feelings.

Nothing is as it seems. We'll never know the truth, but hey, maybe they're trying to stop another election...

I can’t believe this happened! Political violence has no place in our society. We must stand against this.

We must identify all forms of political violence against our public officials. We are with those affected and support them.

Blame the rhetoric! When you constantly demonize your opponents, this is what happens. Shameful.
