Piastri Optimistic Despite McLaren's Qualifying Challenges in Montreal

Oscar Piastri, the current Formula One leader, expressed optimism following a qualifying session that saw McLaren's team boss, Andrea Stella, focusing on damage limitation for the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix. Piastri secured a third-place starting position on the grid, while his teammate, Lando Norris, who trails in the standings by 10 points after nine races, qualified in seventh.

George Russell of Mercedes claimed pole position, with Max Verstappen of Red Bull, the victor for the past three years, securing the second spot on the front row. This mirrored the top two qualifying positions from the 2024 season at Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Piastri, who has won five races this season and aims to become the first Australian to win six in a single campaign, acknowledged the challenge ahead.

Piastri noted the strong race pace demonstrated by Russell and Verstappen during the practice runs, indicating that a victory would not be easy. The qualifying session, which provided a talking point for those discussing the rivalry between Russell and Verstappen after a previous incident, saw McLaren fall short of their usual pace. This marked the first pole position for Mercedes this season.

Stella emphasized the shift in focus to the race, highlighting the team's expectation of improved race pace. He suggested that the weekend might require a strategy of damage limitation. Norris acknowledged his mistakes during the session, including contact with the wall and errors at the final corner, which impacted his performance.

Norris admitted that the car wasn't quite capable of securing pole position, but he believed a top-three finish was achievable. He attributed his errors to pushing the car too hard on a track where such mistakes are easily made. He also expressed the difficulty of achieving a podium finish due to the team's lack of pace compared to previous races.
