A recent survey has highlighted that more than a third of parents have felt compelled to raise issues regarding the hygiene and condition of toilets in their children’s schools. Conducted by the charity Parentkind, this poll of 2,000 parents revealed that approximately 10 percent of respondents reported their child had asked to stay home from school because of concerns related to the bathroom facilities.
The findings indicated that 17 percent of parents described the toilets at their children's schools as unclean. Some parents have shared alarming experiences, including one describing their children feeling like they were "stepping into a horror movie" when using the facilities, while another noted a cockroach sighting in the school restrooms. Additionally, the survey noted that 11 percent of parents stated their child avoided school altogether over worries about the toilets.
In light of these troubling findings, Parentkind is urging the Government to prioritize funding to address what they deem as "disgusting" school toilet conditions, as part of a broader initiative to improve the overall school environment. This comes on the heels of recent announcements from the Chancellor promising substantial funding for repairing dilapidated classrooms and rebuilding schools.
Several parents have reported distressing incidents involving their children, such as wetting themselves or experiencing constipation due to the unsanitary conditions of school toilets. Jason Elsom, Chief Executive of Parentkind, emphasized the urgent need to address these issues, stating that numerous children are facing embarrassment and health issues directly tied to inadequate bathroom facilities.
Pepe Di’Iasio, the general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), acknowledged the significance of maintaining clean and functional toilets but noted that many schools are grappling with aging infrastructure that demands extensive upkeep due to years of insufficient government funding. He called for urgent improvements in investment to modernize and refurbish school facilities.

This is absolutely appalling! No child should have to face that kind of environment.

Parents should be teaching their kids good hygiene habits, not just complaining.

My child has refused to use the school toilets for the same reason. It's heartbreaking!

It's not just about cleanliness, it's about the dignity and well-being of our children.
