Authorities have successfully located one of the black boxes from the ill-fated Boeing 787 involved in the crash that occurred shortly after takeoff in India. This flight data recorder was retrieved from the rooftop of a building near Ahmedabad airport, where the aircraft crashed, resulting in the fatalities of nearly all 242 individuals on board, leaving only one survivor.
The investigation is currently focusing on critical components such as the engines, flaps, and landing gear to understand the cause of the crash. Meanwhile, the cockpit voice recorder, which is vital for the inquiry, has yet to be found. Following the accident, India’s aviation regulator has mandated thorough safety inspections on the entire fleet of Boeing 787s operated by Air India.
The Air India flight AI171, destined for London Gatwick, experienced a rapid loss of altitude just moments after takeoff, ultimately colliding with a building that housed medical accommodations, leading to additional civilian casualties. A passenger who survived, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, described his harrowing experience of the flight becoming unstable almost immediately after liftoff, culminating in a violent crash into a structure.
Air India currently operates over 30 Dreamliners, including various versions of the Boeing 787, although there has been no communication from government officials regarding grounding the aircraft. In light of the incident, the aviation regulator's orders for extra maintenance of the Boeing 787 fleet highlight the seriousness of the situation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has personally visited the crash site and hospitalized individuals, including Ramesh. A helpline established by the UK government in response to the disaster has received close to 300 calls since the event occurred.
Tributes are flooding in for the victims, with condolences expressed for Dr. Prateek Joshi, described as a kind figure by colleagues, and two young sisters, Dhir and Heer Baxi, who were returning to London after a surprise visit to celebrate their grandmother's birthday. The tragedy has claimed lives from various backgrounds, including a British couple known for their work in spiritual wellness, as well as a family including a young child.
