Two teenagers from New Mexico have been indicted in connection with the shooting death of a homeless man. The victim, 23-year-old Christopher Sturluson, was found dead in a tent behind an apartment complex in Albuquerque on May 1st.
According to authorities, Sturluson had an interaction with the two teens, reportedly asking them to stop shooting in a nearby creek. Evidence of a shooting was discovered in the area the night before the body was found.
Police utilized ShotSpotter, an acoustic gunshot detection system, which indicated that ten gunshots were fired just before 9 p.m. on April 30th. Officers responded to the initial shots and spoke with Sturluson, who stated that three individuals had been shooting at him and that he had asked them to stop.
Between 10:15 p.m. and 11:50 p.m., six additional gunshots were recorded. Joshua Curtis, 18, and a 17-year-old, whose identity has not been released, were arrested and charged with first-degree murder and other offenses. The 17-year-old has a history of criminal activity, including gun-related incidents.
The District Attorney’s Office has decided to charge the 17-year-old as an adult in this case. Curtis is also being tried as an adult. Curtis was taken into custody six days after being charged, while the 17-year-old was already in custody at the Bernalillo County Juvenile Detention Center when the charges were filed.
Curtis' attorney stated that it is his job to ensure the case is fully investigated and to identify the facts behind the charges. He emphasized that Curtis is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
