President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukrainian forces were slowly pushing Russian troops out of the Sumy region. Russian forces had managed to gain a presence there in recent weeks. In his nightly video address, Zelensky expressed his gratitude to the soldiers involved.
Mykhailo Podolyak, an advisor to the Ukrainian president, noted a build-up of Russian personnel and equipment in the Sumy region. This followed months of Ukrainian military actions across the border in the Kursk region. He also cautioned against drawing definitive conclusions until the situation on the ground was fully understood.
Russian forces began entering the Sumy region in April. This occurred after Vladimir Putin called for the establishment of a buffer zone, following the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Kursk region.
Furthermore, Ukraine reported that Russia had suffered the loss of over one million troops since the start of the invasion in February 2022.
