A new survey has highlighted significant public discontent regarding President Donald Trump's decisions around immigration enforcement and the recent deployment of National Guard and Marine troops to Los Angeles. Conducted by Reuters/Ipsos with 1,136 American adults participating, the poll shows a notable divide in perceptions about the administration's actions. Although there is considerable backing for increasing deportations among those unlawfully in the United States, 49 percent of respondents feel that Trump's mass arrest tactics have exceeded acceptable limits, while only 40 percent disagree with this sentiment.
The survey also indicates that Americans are largely critical of the president's choice to send military personnel to manage protests in major cities, particularly as hostility toward immigration enforcement intensifies. Results reveal that 50 percent disapprove of the administration’s military intervention, while a mere 35 percent express approval. Additionally, just under half of those surveyed—49 percent—oppose Trump’s push to arrest local officials opposing federal immigration policies, contrasting with 35 percent who support such measures.
The protests, which originated in Los Angeles, have now spread to other cities and witnessed some instances of violence, resulting in injuries and property damage. When asked whether the protests have escalated too far, 46 percent agreed, while only 38 percent felt they had not. Interestingly, despite the negative impacts observed, a slight majority—48 percent—endorsed the deployment of military forces to restore order during violent protests.
The timing of this survey coincides with the arrival of the first group of U.S. Marines in Los Angeles, part of a larger contingent dispatched by the Trump administration. In contrast, California's Governor Gavin Newsom has initiated legal proceedings against the federal government, challenging the legality of Trump's use of the National Guard. A recent ruling declared Trump’s action illegal due to a violation of the Tenth Amendment, but an appeals court has temporarily allowed Trump to maintain control of the National Guard while awaiting a more in-depth hearing.
Nationwide protests continue to address the increased immigration raids, particularly as the "No Kings" movement gains traction, with events planned parallel to a parade celebrating the president's birthday and the anniversary of the U.S. Army.
