A man named Alexander Dighton, aged 28, has received a life sentence after committing a violent assault on police officers at the Talbot Green Police Station in Rhondda Cynon Taf on January 31. Dighton, who was wearing body armor and armed with a hatchet and Molotov cocktails, attempted to ignite a petrol bomb and target a police van. He also smashed the windows of two vehicles with a pole during the incident.
When police officers approached him, Dighton expressed frustration, stating he was “fed up” and proceeded to attack. Efforts to subdue him with a Taser were unsuccessful due to the body armor he was wearing. Dighton violently swung a pole at one officer, struck another in the head, and stabbed a third in the thigh, narrowly avoiding a critical injury. Two of the three injured officers required hospitalization as a result of the attack.
In his post-incident interview, Dighton expressed a lack of remorse, stating that he did not consider the impact of his actions, only that “blood had to be spilt.” He pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including attempted murder of Detective Constable Jack Cotton and grievous bodily harm towards other officers. Concerns were raised about Dighton's extremist views, with his sister reporting him to the Prevent anti-terrorism initiative for holding potentially dangerous beliefs and being associated with incel groups, which are known for their misogynistic ideologies.
During the sentencing, Judge Mark Lucraft KC emphasized the terrorist nature of Dighton's actions and noted the deep impact the violent assault had on the experienced police officers. He commented on Dighton's entrenched views and highlighted the exceptional courage demonstrated by the officers involved. Chief Superintendent Stephen Jones praised their professionalism amidst the chaos, while authorities noted that Dighton's premeditated actions indicated an intent to harm law enforcement and public safety. The judge sentenced Dighton to life in prison with a minimum term of 22 years.
