Air India Flight Crash Claims Lives, Leaving Community and World in Shock and Grief

The aftermath of the Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad's Meghani Nagar is marked by profound grief. The Patni family is among those devastated by the tragedy. Babibehen Babu Bhai Patni, a seventy-year-old woman, sits inconsolable, mourning the loss of her twelve-year-old grandson, Akash. Her son and daughter-in-law sustained serious injuries. Akash was with his mother when the plane crashed, and his body was consumed by the fire.

Kajal Patni, Akash's elder sister, recounts the final moments of her brother's life. He had gone to get lunch for their parents when the crash occurred. She describes the deafening explosion and the subsequent dark smoke, and the agonizing wait to see her brother's body. The family's grief is palpable, amplified by the circulation of images of Akash's remains.

Shahana Khatoon, who was working in the medical college hostel kitchen, recalls the explosion and the ensuing chaos. She and a colleague managed to escape with the help of two boys, who were injured in the process. She anxiously awaits news of her missing co-worker and her two-year-old granddaughter. Her husband, Kurban Ali, rushed to the scene, fearing for their lives.

Arunbhai Mangal Bhai Parmar witnessed the plane's descent from his kitchen window. He describes the aircraft's sudden drop and the subsequent blast. Suresh Bhai, who was working in his sewing shop, initially thought it was a bomb. The surrounding streets were thrown into pandemonium.

The campus compound was strewn with debris. Initial images show a section of the fuselage embedded in the college building. The crash resulted in the deaths of at least five medical students and injuries to around fifty others. The air was thick with the smell of burnt bodies, as relatives gathered outside the hospital, their faces etched with loss. Security forces were quickly deployed, and the government imposed information controls. Air India's parent company has pledged financial assistance to the victims' families.
