Miami Launches Countdown to the 2026 World Cup Amid Immigration Concerns

As the countdown to the 2026 World Cup officially begins, Miami officials are keen to address worries that the country's tighter immigration regulations may discourage international fans from attending. The celebratory event, held on Wednesday and featuring renowned singer Marc Anthony, was organized shortly after disturbances in Los Angeles and amid the new border control measures put in place by the Trump administration.

Alina T. Hudak, president of the 2026 Miami Host Committee, spoke at the countdown event, reassuring attendees that Miami is a very inviting city excited to welcome visitors from around the globe. The newly unveiled digital clock, which will be displayed at Miami International Airport, signifies the start of the countdown marking 365 days until the World Cup—an event expected to be the largest in history, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches across three North American nations.

Security measures are under scrutiny, particularly with the involvement of immigration enforcement agencies. Brazilian tourist Marcio Carvalho Da Silva Correia mentioned that he had heard worries from others about the possibility of deportation during the World Cup festivities. However, he remained optimistic that the joyous atmosphere of the event would overshadow such fears.

Rodney Barreto, co-chair of the Miami Host Committee, stated that while Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will assist with security, their role is not to apprehend individuals. Over at an Argentine restaurant in Miami’s Little Haiti area, fans of the national team expressed enthusiasm, convinced that supporters would travel for the tournament regardless of the immigration climate.

For Miami—a city enriched by numerous immigrant communities—hosting the World Cup represents a challenge of balancing its diverse cultural identity while addressing the realities of immigration policies. Resident Pedro Lub shared his concerns about friends in precarious immigration situations, hoping that authorities would not use the event as a pretext for stricter enforcement. He expressed that the primary goal for many is simply to enjoy great soccer matches without the fear of repercussions, and he anticipates a successful tournament.
