Following recent sightings of Zhang Yaodong working at his seafood stall in a Tampines Industrial Park coffee shop, the 47-year-old has garnered significant online support for his new business venture.
In response to the outpouring of encouragement, the former Mediacorp actor, who is also nominated for a Star Award, launched a TikTok account. His first video, posted on Wednesday, was filmed at his stall. In the video, he expressed his gratitude to fans and those around him for their support.
Zhang introduced his stall in the video and acknowledged that customers had taken pictures of him working. He expressed his appreciation for the support he has received on social media and thanked his friends for their encouragement. He also mentioned that he was grateful to those who planned to visit his stall to show their support after seeing recent reports.
Zhang explained that he prefers to avoid excessive advertising for his stall, as he is focused on improving the quality of his food. He also thanked his friend Catherine Chew, who had encouraged him to create a TikTok account.
He admitted that he was initially hesitant about social media. However, Chew's persistent encouragement to share a different side of himself eventually convinced him. She had also been connecting him with other business owners for potential collaborations on the platform.
In his caption, Zhang described this as a new beginning and expressed his gratitude for the support he has received. He reflected on the experience at his stall as a turning point, emphasizing that the kindness shown to him gave him the strength to reflect and plan his next steps. He concluded by stating that he would share his journey with his audience.
It was revealed in February of this year that Zhang was no longer managed by Mediacorp's talent management arm, The Celebrity Agency, following a series of controversies. Last November, the Malaysia-born actor shared that he has two daughters and expressed regret for not being more present during their childhood.
