Xi Jinping Emphasizes Multilateralism and Cooperation in Climate Governance at Leaders Meeting

In a recent address delivered via video link to the Leaders Meeting on Climate and the Just Transition, Chinese President Xi Jinping marked significant anniversaries, including the 10th year of the Paris Agreement and the 80th anniversary of the United Nations. He emphasized that with the rapid changes taking place globally, humanity is confronted with new challenges. Xi highlighted the detrimental effects of unilateralism and protectionism pursued by some countries on global governance and international order, asserting that history will progress amidst these challenges.

Xi outlined four essential principles for addressing climate change effectively. Firstly, he called for a steadfast commitment to multilateralism, urging nations to protect the UN-centered international system and uphold fairness and justice while prioritizing green development and addressing climate change collectively. Secondly, he stressed the need for enhanced international cooperation, advocating for openness and inclusivity that enable the flow of innovative technologies and services. He specifically noted China’s commitment to deepening South-South cooperation to aid developing countries.

The third point Xi raised was the importance of accelerating a just transition in which environmental objectives align with societal well-being, emphasizing the need for developing nations to receive support from their more developed counterparts. The final point focused on the necessity of actionable results in climate commitments, where countries should work towards implementing their nationally determined contributions (NDCs). Xi indicated that China plans to announce its 2035 NDCs before the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference.

He reiterated the essential nature of harmony between humans and nature as a hallmark of China's modernization efforts. Xi noted the significant strides China has made in renewable energy development and afforestation, stating that the country remains committed to accelerating its climate action and international collaboration, aiming to establish a sustainable global community. He concluded by expressing China's willingness to engage in shared responsibility to create a cleaner and more beautiful world for all.

Words about a sustainable future don’t match China’s heavy reliance on fossil fuels right now. Show us the results!

How can Xi emphasize the importance of harmony with nature when China's ecological footprint is so massive?

Xi Jinping’s address is just another way to deflect from China’s own environmental issues. How can he talk about multilateralism when China is the biggest polluter?
