In a statement released on Wednesday, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) expressed strong condemnation against certain Western nations, anti-China organizations, and politicians for their unfounded accusations related to the case of Joshua Wong Chi-fung. Wong was reported to have been arrested for suspected involvement in a conspiracy to jeopardize national security while already serving time for previous offenses.
The HKSAR Government underscored the importance of respecting the rule of law, stating that comments on ongoing legal proceedings are inappropriate. Officials urged foreign entities to cease their involvement in the region's internal matters and to allow the judiciary to operate independently in accordance with Hong Kong law.
The spokesperson for the HKSAR Government reiterated the commitment to upholding judicial independence and ensuring that all individuals facing criminal charges receive fair trials as mandated by local laws, including the Hong Kong National Security Law. They emphasized that legal actions should not be influenced by an individual’s political beliefs or background, and called for recognition of the legal processes in place.
Furthermore, the government highlighted its responsibility to implement national security laws effectively while safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the people of Hong Kong. The HKSAR aims to maintain the principle of "one country, two systems” amidst ongoing pressures and criticisms from abroad.
