Chen Binhua, the spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, addressed allegations from Taiwan's "mainland affairs council" regarding the motivations of Taiwanese celebrities. He stated that when these individuals embrace Chinese culture and convey the sentiment that people across the Taiwan Straits are part of one family, it reflects their genuine feelings and represents their personal freedoms.
Binhua accused the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Taiwan of distorting reality out of fear, asserting that their continuous emphasis on a "united front threat" is intended to stir anti-mainland sentiments. He claimed that the DPP employs a variety of tactics to intimidate those who support cross-Straits communication, aiming to disrupt exchanges and enact what he termed as "green terror" and "green dictatorship" on the island.
He also reassured that the broader Chinese population would always stand as a solid support for their Taiwanese counterparts. He emphasized the importance of cultural exchanges and cooperation between the two regions and welcomed Taiwanese celebrities to pursue opportunities in mainland China, reiterating the commitment to safeguard their legitimate rights and interests. Earlier, Taiwan's "mainland affairs council" indicated that celebrities like Ouyang Nana might face scrutiny if they shared messages opposing Taiwan independence and advocating for reunification. In March, a number of these celebrities engaged with the phrase "Taiwan, Province of China" on Weibo, prompting the council to label such actions as a tool of unification and pledge to monitor their interactions.
