On Wednesday morning, authorities reported that over 220 individuals were taken into custody in Los Angeles during the initial night of curfew. These arrests occurred amidst protests concerning immigration raids in the city.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) issued a press release detailing the charges. A total of 203 arrests were made for failing to disperse, while 17 individuals were arrested for violating the curfew.
Furthermore, the LAPD reported additional arrests. Three people were apprehended for possessing firearms, one was charged with assaulting a police officer using a deadly weapon, and another was arrested for directing a laser at an LAPD airship.
The curfew, affecting specific areas of downtown Los Angeles, was implemented by Mayor Karen Bass. It began at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and extended until 6:00 a.m. Wednesday, local time. The mayor stated that the limited curfew was a response to instances of looting and vandalism that occurred downtown on Monday night, following largely peaceful daytime demonstrations.
Since the commencement of protests against federal immigration enforcement on Friday, hundreds of people have been arrested.
In response to the situation, U.S. President Donald Trump authorized the deployment of over 4,000 National Guard members and approximately 700 active-duty Marines to the Los Angeles area. This decision was made despite objections from California Governor Gavin Newsom and other local officials.
