A federal judge denied California Governor Gavin Newsom's request for an immediate temporary restraining order. Newsom sought to restrict President Donald Trump's deployment of National Guard troops and U.S. Marines to address ongoing unrest related to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities in Los Angeles.
U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer, appointed by former President Bill Clinton, decided against immediate intervention. Instead, he scheduled a hearing to consider California's motion for a temporary restraining order for Thursday. The judge, brother of retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, allowed the federal government to submit arguments by Wednesday morning and gave California until Thursday morning to respond.
Judge Breyer is overseeing the lawsuit filed by Newsom and California Attorney General Rob Bonta. The lawsuit challenges Trump's federalization of National Guard troops and the deployment of Marines to Los Angeles.
Newsom has publicly criticized Trump administration officials, accusing the president of improperly deploying National Guard members without consulting California law enforcement. The Trump administration stated its ICE operations aimed to remove "criminal illegal immigrant killers, rapists, gangbangers, drug dealers, human traffickers, and domestic abusers" from the streets.
Trump responded, stating that the troops' presence prevented Los Angeles from being destroyed. He also criticized the governor's handling of the situation.
Demonstrations against ICE raids in Los Angeles have led to violent rioting and looting, with buildings defaced with anti-American messages. Newsom stated that the administration was pushing mass deportations, targeting hardworking immigrant families. He sought a court order against the use of the military in law enforcement activities.
Newsom claimed Trump's intervention escalated the rioting. Vice President JD Vance countered, arguing that Newsom's policies contributed to the unrest. Vance blamed the governor and the mayor of Los Angeles, accusing them of encouraging the riots to promote mass migration. He also criticized Newsom's policies regarding healthcare for illegal immigrants. Vance asserted that the problems existed before Trump's involvement and blamed Newsom's policies for the situation.

This is a joke! California needs all the help it can get, and Newsom is just blocking it out of spite.

The National Guard is there to keep law and order. Newsom's request is completely unreasonable!
