The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has revealed that officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) faced an assault while carrying out a warrant at a meat-processing facility in Omaha, Nebraska. During this operation, which took place on a Wednesday, ICE apprehended more than 70 undocumented immigrants, several of whom had prior legal troubles, including local arrest warrants, DUI convictions, or had been deported in the past.
ICE's acting Director Todd Lyons described the incident involving an undocumented Honduran national who allegedly brandished a weapon and assaulted federal officers. He underscored that the individual was not merely an “out of status” immigrant but rather a violent criminal that posed a significant threat to law enforcement and the public. Lyons asserted that breaching the law by entering the country illegally and subsequently attacking federal officers escalates the danger posed by such individuals.
Many of those detained could potentially face further federal charges, including fraud, assault on a federal officer, resisting arrest, and misuse of documents. Additionally, ICE officials, including Mark Zito, the special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Kansas City, highlighted the daily risks taken by their agents and the detrimental impact of derogatory rhetoric on law enforcement's ability to effectively protect communities.
While details about the assault on officers were limited, reports emerged that protests occurred outside the meat plant, with some demonstrators allegedly engaging in aggressive actions toward ICE vehicles. Glenn Valley Foods' president expressed surprise at the raid, noting their company's compliance with E-Verify to verify employee immigration status, and questioned why they were targeted if they were following regulations.
In the aftermath, local officials, such as Douglas County Commissioner Roger Garcia, announced ongoing efforts to coordinate support for the families affected by the raids, including response groups and legal assistance. The operation was a coordinated effort involving multiple agencies, including the FBI, the Department of Justice, and the Nebraska State Patrol, among others.

They assaulted a federal officer? Throw the book at them! Zero tolerance.

E-Verify compliance yet still raided? This shows ICE has no genuine concern for laws or regulations.
