A former senior adviser to President Joe Biden has agreed to provide testimony to the House Oversight Committee. This closed-door interview is part of the committee's investigation into claims regarding Biden's cognitive abilities while in office.
Neera Tanden, who held several senior positions within the Biden administration, including senior adviser, White House Staff Secretary, and Director of the Domestic Policy Council, is scheduled to testify on June 24. The testimony will be recorded and reviewed as part of the investigation led by Republican committee members.
The investigation focuses on concerns about Biden's mental acuity and allegations of a cover-up by his staff and allies. Republican Representative James Comer, the committee chairman, has accused Democrats, the media, and the Biden administration of supporting a leader he believes was unfit. Comer also suggests the use of "autopens" to issue pardons was part of this alleged cover-up.
Tanden has acknowledged the use of autopens in various administrations but has not commented publicly on Biden's use of the device or his cognitive function. Comer had previously requested Tanden and other former staffers to testify, threatening subpoenas for non-compliance.
Tanden, a prominent Democratic political consultant, has a long history of working in Democratic administrations. Her nomination to the Director of the Office of Management and Budget was withdrawn due to controversy surrounding her past social media activity. She was later appointed as a senior adviser and staff secretary.
The testimony follows a renewed focus on Biden's mental fitness, which was also addressed in a recent book. Comer has also requested testimony from other former senior advisors and staff members.
President Biden has consistently maintained that he was the decision-maker during his presidency. There is no evidence to suggest that aides acted on his behalf or that anyone other than Biden used the autopen.
