CNN correspondent Jason Carroll was briefly detained by Los Angeles Police Department officers on Monday evening. The incident occurred while he was reporting on the ongoing protests against Donald Trump’s immigration raids. The network later expressed its satisfaction that the matter was quickly resolved.
Carroll was reporting from one of the protests in Los Angeles, where the national media's attention was focused due to the president's deployment of the National Guard and Marines. Shortly after finishing a live report during anchor Laura Coates’ broadcast, Carroll was detained by law enforcement.
Coates, noticing the situation, interrupted her discussion with a CNN analyst to inquire about what was happening. Carroll, with his microphone still live, announced that he was being detained. An officer informed him that he was being removed from the protest area and would not be allowed to return.
A man from The New York Times offered Carroll's crew video footage of the incident. Carroll thanked him for the offer. After being escorted behind the police perimeter, Carroll explained the situation to viewers. He stated that he was told to put his hands behind his back and was informed that he was being detained.
Carroll clarified that he was a CNN reporter, but the officers insisted he leave the scene. He was not put in zip ties but was escorted out of the area. A CNN spokesperson confirmed that Carroll and his team were briefly held by the LAPD. They expressed gratitude that the situation was resolved quickly after the reporting team presented their CNN credentials. CNN stated it would continue to report on the events in Los Angeles.
Carroll mentioned that he wasn't overly concerned about the detention, considering it part of the job. He noted that it was unexpected, as he had been covering protests all day and officers typically recognize the press's role.

Detaining reporters just fuels the fires of mistrust between police and the community. This has to stop.
