A Mexican man, Ramón Morales-Reyes, who was facing deportation after being falsely accused of sending a threatening letter to Donald Trump, may be released soon. A Chicago immigration judge determined on Tuesday that Morales-Reyes, 54, does not pose a public threat and set his bond at $7,500.
Morales-Reyes's daughter, Ana, expressed hope for his return, thanking the judge and the community for their support. However, the Department of Homeland Security maintains that he is still a threat. They cited his illegal presence in the country and previous arrests for various offenses.
Morales-Reyes's lawyer, Cain Oulahan, expressed optimism about his release this week, emphasizing the importance of reuniting him with his family. Morales-Reyes was arrested in May in Wisconsin after being wrongly identified as the author of letters containing threats to Donald Trump and immigration agents.
The threatening letter, written in English, stated the author's frustration with the former president's policies. Initially, Homeland Security officials celebrated Morales-Reyes's arrest. However, his attorneys and family members pointed out that he cannot read or write in English.
Last week, Demetric D. Scott, a Wisconsin man, confessed to writing the letters under Morales-Reyes's name. Scott admitted he wrote the letters to prevent Morales-Reyes from testifying in a robbery case. Scott was allegedly recorded detailing the scheme from jail.
Scott, 52, has been charged with identity theft, intimidating a witness, and two counts of bail jumping. These charges are in addition to previous allegations of armed robbery and other offenses related to a 2023 incident where he allegedly attacked Morales-Reyes.
DHS stated that Morales-Reyes had entered the U.S. unlawfully multiple times. Morales-Reyes's family is seeking a U visa for him, as he is a survivor and witness of violent crime. If he cannot post bond, deportation proceedings will begin on July 10.
