Kim Kardashian voiced her opinion on Tuesday evening regarding the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Los Angeles, which have triggered ongoing protests nationwide.
These large-scale deportations of undocumented immigrants, initiated by President Donald Trump, led to widespread demonstrations in Los Angeles on Friday, and these protests have persisted. In an unexpected action, Trump dispatched thousands of National Guard troops and 700 Marines to Los Angeles, without the approval of California Governor Gavin Newsom, in response to the protests. Governor Newsom criticized the move, stating it "inflamed a combustible situation," and the state has legally challenged it.
Kardashian, leveraging her substantial Instagram following of 356 million, expressed her support for the immigrant community in her hometown. She stated that there "has to be a better way" to address illegal immigration than the ICE raids. She emphasized that while ICE's stated purpose is to protect the country and remove violent criminals, witnessing the separation of innocent, hardworking individuals from their families in a cruel manner necessitates speaking out and doing what is right.
She highlighted the integral role immigrants play in the city's fabric, describing them as neighbors, friends, classmates, coworkers, and family. Kardashian asserted that regardless of political affiliation, the contributions of immigrants are essential to the thriving of communities. She concluded that it is unacceptable to ignore the fear and injustice that prevent people from living freely and safely, and that a better solution is needed.
In the past, Kardashian has expressed positive sentiments towards Trump. She publicly expressed gratitude after he commuted the sentence of Alice Johnson in 2018. Johnson was released after serving over two decades of a life sentence for a nonviolent drug offense, with Kardashian's assistance. Kardashian had worked for months to get Johnson's sentence commuted, including meeting with Trump. During a late-night TV appearance in July 2018, after meeting with Trump, Kardashian stated she had "nothing bad to say about the president.
