Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth appeared before Congress on Tuesday, marking the beginning of a series of hearings scheduled for the coming week. During this initial session, he faced intense questioning on several key issues. These included the deployment of troops to manage protests in Los Angeles, the allocation of funds for Ukraine's defense against Russia, and his frequent use of the term "warrior ethos."
Democratic Representative Marcy Kaptur voiced her concerns regarding Hegseth's emphasis on "warrior ethos." She noted that her family members who served in the military, and who were recognized for their combat service, simply identified as soldiers.
When questioned about the financial implications of deploying troops to Los Angeles, Hegseth deferred to his special assistant, Bryn MacDonnell. She stated that the estimated cost was $134 million, primarily covering travel, accommodation, and sustenance expenses.
Regarding the Ukraine security assistance initiative, Hegseth indicated that the budget would be reduced. He explained that the current administration held a different perspective on the conflict. The administration's position favored a negotiated, peaceful resolution, believing it to be in the best interests of both parties involved and the nation, particularly given the global landscape.
