North Dakota Couple Charged with Murder in Foster Daughter's Death

In a tragic case from North Dakota, a couple is facing serious charges after the death of their three-year-old foster daughter, who had autism. Raymond F. Johnson, 62, and Jamie L. Johnson, 44, appeared in court via video connection, where investigators revealed grim details about the circumstances of the child's death. Emergency responders responded to a call from Jamie Johnson on March 19, leading them to the family’s home in Stanley, where the girl was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Jamie Johnson informed law enforcement that the child had been injured after falling down the stairs days before her passing. She claimed the girl had bitten her during a food-related incident just before she lost consciousness. However, the affidavit from the police indicates that the little girl had various injuries, including bruises and facial trauma, which were noted by authorities and medical personnel. Jamie asserted that the child, who exhibited self-harming behaviors typical of her condition, was responsible for some of her own injuries.

Raymond Johnson stated that he last saw the girl sleeping on the couch and noted she was making whimpering sounds. The examination revealed the preliminary cause of death to be inflicted blunt force trauma to the head, and the incident has been classified as a homicide. Investigators from the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation obtained disturbing footage from a home surveillance camera, showing Jamie Johnson perpetrating violent acts against the child on the day of her death. Reports indicate that she was seen hitting the girl in the face and abusing her physically, while Raymond reportedly kicked the child when she bit Jamie.

Further investigations uncovered claims of ongoing abuse by the couple, as revealed through interviews with other children in the household. Allegations suggest that Jamie was the primary abuser, whereas Raymond was perceived as the more lenient parent. As a result, both parents are facing several serious felony charges, which include murder and child abuse. During a recent hearing, the prosecutor requested a hefty bond of $1 million for each defendant due to the nature of the charges and a potential flight risk. Though Raymond did not object to the bond, Jamie pleaded for a lower amount to facilitate her ability to secure legal counsel. The judge ultimately decided to set a high bond, with both defendants expected back in court soon, facing the possibility of life imprisonment if found guilty of murder.
