Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, a 20-year-old of Pakistani nationality, has been extradited from Canada to the United States, where he faces serious allegations of plotting a terror attack inspired by ISIS aimed at Jewish individuals in New York City. The Justice Department has confirmed that he is set to make an initial court appearance on Wednesday, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
According to U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton, Khan's intended massacre would have involved the use of automatic weapons to specifically target the Jewish community, showcasing his extremist and antisemitic motivations. With charges including providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization and attempting to commit an international act of terrorism, he could face a life sentence if found guilty.
Khan, who also goes by the name Shahzeb Jadoon, allegedly began his harmful scheme late last year, being apprehended near the Canadian border as he attempted to initiate his plan. In November 2023, he reportedly began expressing his support for ISIS on social media and making contact with undercover officers, discussing his ambitions to carry out a terror attack on U.S. soil.
He supposedly collaborated with an associate in the U.S. to target specific Chabad religious centers but later decided to attack a major Jewish religious center in New York City, especially on the anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas assault on Israel. Khan allegedly shared thoughts on the potential catastrophic impact of his plan, claiming it could be the largest attack on U.S. territory since September 11.
Following this incident, a federal hate crime charge against another individual, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, has raised concerns about a surge in antisemitic violence connected to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, highlighting a troubling trend of harassment and aggression towards Jewish communities across the nation.
