This data comes amid heightened governmental responses following the protests that erupted over the weekend in response to ICE's aggressive immigration actions.
President Trump has responded to the unrest by mobilizing thousands of military personnel, including members of the National Guard and Marines, to restore order in Los Angeles. The poll shows a clear preference for state and local authorities to manage the protests, with 56% of participants supporting this view compared to 25% who think the federal government should take charge. There remains a divide regarding the nature of the protests, with 38% of individuals believing they were mostly peaceful, while 36% viewed them as mostly violent.
Overall opposition to the deployment of Marines by the Trump administration is significant, with 47% of people disapproving of this action, while only 34% approve. Notably, support for the protests is heavily partisan, as 58% of Democrats favor them while only 15% of Republicans do. Within the Democratic Party, some leaders, including Senator John Fetterman, have criticized their own faction for not adequately denouncing violent actions associated with the protests, stating that such behavior undermines their moral stance.
During the demonstrations, confrontations arose between protesters and law enforcement, leading to damaged property and over 100 arrests. In response to the federal response, Governor Gavin Newsom has initiated legal action against the Trump administration. Trump has publicly expressed his belief that without military intervention, Los Angeles would be in chaos, criticizing the local leadership as incompetent.
