Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has enacted a curfew for downtown Los Angeles, aimed at countering the activities of looters and vandals who are allegedly exploiting the unrest linked to Donald Trump's controversial response to ongoing immigration protests in the city. The curfew will be in effect from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m., and Bass has warned that failure to comply with this order may result in detention. Following the implementation of the curfew, the Los Angeles Police Department reported making multiple arrests.
In a swift move, approximately 700 U.S. Marines are scheduled to arrive in Los Angeles shortly after President Trump ordered the mobilization of this battalion. The Trump administration is reportedly considering sending troops to additional cities to manage the escalating protests, according to a source in the New York Times. On the other hand, California Governor Gavin Newsom has voiced his concerns about the military presence, claiming it increases tensions and has requested an emergency injunction in court to challenge the deployment, labeling it "unlawful" and “excessive.” A judicial hearing is anticipated for Thursday. In a televised statement, Newsom criticized Trump’s actions, describing them as a blatant misuse of authority, after the president made disparaging comments about the city and vowed to “liberate” it.
