China's Ministry of National Defense voiced strong disapproval of the United States defense chief's address at the Shangri-La Dialogue. The ministry stated the speech was filled with hegemonic logic, seriously infringing upon China's sovereign rights and interests, and misrepresenting China's policy positions.
Ministry spokesman Zhang Xiaogang's statement responded to the US defense secretary's remarks at the security summit. The US official had urged Asia-Pacific nations to increase military spending to counter perceived threats from China, particularly in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait.
Zhang criticized the US for using the Shangri-La Dialogue to create disputes, incite confrontation, and pursue its own interests. He highlighted the speech's deeply ingrained hegemonic logic and Cold War mentality, noting it disregarded regional efforts for stability and deviated from the global desire for peace.
The spokesman pointed out the US's actions, including initiating trade wars, forming alliances, strengthening military deployments in the Asia-Pacific, interfering in other countries' affairs, and stirring up tensions. He asserted that such actions, driven by self-interest, would ultimately harm the US itself.
Zhang reiterated China's stance on the Taiwan question, stating it is an internal affair and the US has no right to comment or use it to contain China. He emphasized the People's Liberation Army's commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and crushing any "Taiwan independence" plots or external interference.
Regarding the South China Sea, Zhang highlighted its status as a safe shipping lane. He affirmed China's commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue, upholding its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights, and working with regional countries to build a peaceful, friendly, and cooperative sea. He accused the US of posing the greatest threat to regional peace and stability by forming cliques and stirring up trouble.
The spokesman emphasized China's role as a defender and builder of peace and development in the Asia-Pacific. The Chinese military will collaborate with regional countries to oppose hegemonism, prevent geopolitical conflicts, and counter any forces creating trouble in the region. China will actively pursue the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind, working together to maintain long-term peace, stability, and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific.
