In 2024, China saw continued progress in improving its water use efficiency, as indicated by the annual water resources bulletin released by the Ministry of Water Resources. The report highlights positive trends in water consumption relative to economic output.
Specifically, the bulletin reveals that water consumption per 10,000 yuan of GDP decreased by 4.4 percent year-on-year. Furthermore, water consumption per 10,000 yuan of industrial added value experienced a 5.3 percent reduction. These figures demonstrate a more efficient utilization of water resources across various sectors of the Chinese economy.
The year 2024 also saw above-average levels of both precipitation and overall water resources. The country's average annual precipitation reached 717.7 millimeters, which was 11.4 percent higher than the multi-year average. Total water resources amounted to 3.11 trillion cubic meters, representing a 12.7 percent increase compared to the multi-year average.
The bulletin further indicates a continued increase in the supply of unconventional water sources during 2024. This suggests an ongoing effort to diversify water sources and optimize the overall structure of water resources within the country.
