On October 1, 2024, South Korean army K2 tanks participated in a military parade in Seoul, South Korea, commemorating the 76th anniversary of the armed forces day.
South Korea is reportedly nearing a $6 billion agreement to provide 180 K2 tanks to Poland. The manufacturing of these tanks will be a collaborative effort. Hyundai Rotem, a South Korean company specializing in industrial and defense contracts, will produce 117 tanks. The remaining tanks will be manufactured locally by Poland's state-owned Polish Armaments Group.
The signing ceremony for the contract is anticipated to occur in Poland towards the end of June, according to an unnamed industry source. This agreement is part of a larger $13.7 billion arms deal reached in 2022 between the two countries. The initial deal included K2 tanks, rocket launchers, and fighter jets.
The 2022 agreement was intended to establish a strong military-industrial partnership. Defense companies from both nations hope to capitalize on the demand for weapons in Europe. The finalization of the K2 tank supply contract, initially expected by the end of the previous year, was delayed. This delay was partially attributed to political instability in South Korea, triggered by the brief declaration of martial law in December.
