The Chinese Navy aircraft carrier Liaoning participated in a naval parade off the eastern port city of Qingdao on April 23, 2019, commemorating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy.
For the first time, two Chinese aircraft carriers were observed conducting simultaneous operations in the Pacific Ocean. This information was confirmed by Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya.
Japan’s Defense Ministry verified that the Liaoning and Shandong were operating in separate areas of the Pacific on Saturday. Both carriers were located near remote southern islands that are part of Japan.
The Japanese ministry communicated with Beijing through the Chinese embassy in Japan regarding the operations. The Japanese government indicated it would take further actions as necessary. However, the Foreign Minister did not issue a condemnation of China's actions.
A day prior to the simultaneous operations, Japan reported that the Liaoning had sailed within Japan’s exclusive economic zone near Minamitorishima, a remote island located east of Iwo Jima.
