Nihon University's weightlifting team is embroiled in a scandal. Former head coach Kenji Nanba, 63, was arrested for allegedly defrauding parents of scholarship students. He falsely promised tuition exemptions and collected 2.05 million yen. Nanba reportedly collected 38 million yen from 48 parents over several years, using much of it for personal purposes. The university refunded the money.
Nanba claims the money was a "donation." The university revealed he sent false enrollment information. The weightlifting team, a national champion, dismissed Nanba and reported him to police.
This is the latest in a series of scandals. Similar financial irregularities were found in the track and field and skating clubs, with refunds issued. The university apologized and vowed reforms. Previous incidents include a football team player's malicious hit, the chancellor's tax evasion arrest, and an illegal drug case involving the football team, leading to its disbandment.

The weightlifting team did the right thing by reporting him. They’re victims too.

These athletes relied on those scholarships, and he took that away from them.

This damages the reputation of not just the weightlifting team, but the whole university.

I want to know where that 38 million yen went. More accountability needed!

Hard to believe these things always happen, but pleased they are being uncovered.

Using the 'donation' excuse is a pathetic attempt to cover up theft.

Hopefully, the incident doesn't damage the athletes' achievements.
