Tensions escalated in downtown Los Angeles last night following a day of largely peaceful demonstrations against President Trump's deportation efforts. This followed the administration's decision to significantly increase the military presence in the area.
Law enforcement used flash bangs and foam rounds to disperse protesters. Police officers and National Guard troops, equipped in riot gear, surrounded a federal building as evening fell. Protesters subsequently dispersed, with some moving into the Little Tokyo neighborhood.
California officials have voiced strong opposition to the federal government's actions. The Trump administration's deployment brought the total number of federal forces to 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 active-duty Marines. California leaders announced plans to file a lawsuit against the President regarding the troop deployment.
Several journalists covering the protests in Los Angeles have been injured. A reporter from 9News Australia, a CNN affiliate, was struck by a nonlethal projectile while on air. A Times reporter was also hit by a nonlethal round and received treatment at a hospital, but was not seriously injured.
